"Stopping at Eastbourne to put Shackleton ashore, Endurance continued to Plymouth... Emily (Shackleton's wife) had moved to Eastbourne with the children..."
"Life with Emily at Eastbourne became unbearably claustrophobic. Shackleton, by choice once more a guest in his own home, went there only to rest and keep up appearances. 'He is getting restless - & is chaffing to be off' Emily wrote."
from Shackelton by Roland Huntford"
In 1921 Shackleton made his last visit to Eastbourne aboard The Quest prior to leaving for the South Pole. When The Quest arrived off Eastbourne there was a heavy swell that prevented the ship pulling alongside the pier - so Shackleton was brought ashore by the Eastbourne Lifeboat. He was later to say that ‘The Quest is ready to bump the ice, but it is not ready to bump Eastbourne Pier!’
