The first submarine to be commissioned by the Royal Navy on 19 January 1903 as part of a trial to evaluate the potential of submarines. On 8 August 1912 Holland 5 was being towed to Sheerness but foundered off Beachy Head and sank. It still lies on the sea bed 6 miles south east of the Sovereign Lighthouse.
